Create autobiographical textile samples through embroidery techniques and storytelling exercises. One of the fundamental values of storytelling is that it empowers us to share our narratives in ways that are meaningful to us so that others don’t speak on our behalf. Following the theme of communicating human identity through cloth, weekly storytelling exercises will equip participants with concept development skills to help generate ideas unique to them. With the subject matter being autobiography, participants will translate their stories onto fabric with a needle and thread, creating self-portraits, maps, landscapes, objects, text, or abstract compositions. By the end of this course, participants will have textile samples and one finished artwork that will become their personal accounts of their lived experiences and knowledge.

Who can register: Adults living in South Etobicoke, Etibicoke; who have lived experience of mental illness and/or addiction

About the Instructor
Khadija Aziz (she/her) investigates image-making with textiles using manipulation, experimentation, and the ever-shifting nature of cloth. Through an ongoing exchange between analogue and digital craft processes, she explores the materiality of textiles and in the digital space. Her process-based practice bridges the gaps between textile-making techniques and digital technologies to generate unexpected outcomes through translation, chance, and distortion. Khadija is currently pursuing an MFA at Concordia University’s Fibre & Material Practices program. In recognition of her creative practice, she has received the Shanks Memorial Award in Textiles from Craft Ontario and the Creative Promise Award from Surface Design Association in 2020.
