This short course will engage participants in a collaborative and original sound art project. Participants will work together to create a piece that is meaningful to them. The piece might include spoken or sung words, music, and other sounds that people find interesting (birds recorded on cellphones, sounds from the environment, etc). The course will provide an opportunity to work together and have fun while making something meaningful.

Materials: Access to the internet and email for exchanging sound files.

About the instructor: Nicole Marchesseau’s art involves exploring sounds, words, and images. Her multimedia collaborations have been featured in North America and overseas. Along with Gabrielle Gillespie, she was awarded the 4Talent Award for Innovation at the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival for the film Under My Skin: A Swarm of Bees, also featured at the Rendezvous with Madness Festival in Toronto, and in Terrace, British Columbia at the Shutter 2 Think Festival. Her more recent solo short film project Pandemic Spaceship (2021) screened internationally. Nicole has performed with Jandek, her band Tuna Mind Melt, and various other musicians in Toronto and Guelph. She holds a PhD in music from York University. She is currently also studying social anthropology at the doctoral level. Her proposed research is in mental health and art making in Toronto.
